Another “Best of” list to quibble with…and the shortest of short stories

NPR has a listener-generated list of the “100 Best Beach Books Ever.” Given the unusual heat wave that has taken over the PNW recently, a beach book may be just what the doctor ordered. The list is here. While most of the list is familiar, it raises the question of what makes something a “beach read,” a term most often associated with Judith Krantz and Danielle Steele?

And how many words are there in three minutes? Not many. Ask Colorado writing instructor and waitress Molly Reid, whose “Not That I Care” won this year’s Three Minute Fiction contest, also at NPR. You can read Reid’s winning entry and five runners-up at the site, and start prepping your entry for next year.
